Top seed Alexander Zverev now sets the pace for German men after winning his record-setting 145th match at the ATP Masters 1000 level with an opening victory in Miami on Saturday.

The world No. 2 made amends for his second round loss at Indian Wells, advancing in Florida 6-4, 6-2 over Brit Jakob Fernley.

Zverev’s Masters win total pipped compatriot Tommy Haas, with 144; Boris Becker stands third with 97.

After his loss at Indian Wells to Tallon Griekspoor, Zverev said he has been working hard on serve.

“It’s a shot I’ve worked on since Indian Wells, I had more than two weeks since I lost early there.

“I’m happy with the win today, but hopefully this is just the start of the tournament, and hopefully I can go deep here.”

Fearnley, ranked 83rd, came through qualifying; his main claim to fame this season was a defeat of Nick Kyrgios in the Australian Open first round.
