Alexander Zverev began rebuilding his tennis with just five days to go before the French Open start as the German swept his opening match at the ATP Geneva event on Tuesday.
The third seed benefitted from an opening-round bye, with his 6-2, 6-3 defeat of American Chris Eubanks putting him into the quarter-finals of the clay tune-up which wraps up on Saturday
The current No. 27 who hit a career high of five, is still struggling to make a complete return form the serious ankle injury he suffered in a Roland Garros semi-final a year ago against Rafael Nadal.
2019 Geneva champion Zverev was stretchered off the court and did not return until the start of 2023.
The seed wasted no time in his Swiss match, running off a two-break lead in a quarter of an hour against his 75th-ranked opponent.
Zverev, playing as a wild card entry, collected the opening set in less than half an hour.
The German fended off the only break point he faced as he rolled through the second set and advanced after 67 minutes on his second match point.,
“I’m very happy to be in the quarter-finals,” the winner said. “I’m also happy to be playing golf tomorrow on a day off.
“I’m enjoying myself – I hope it will remain this way for the rest of the week.”
Zverev has had a patch spring on the clay, losing twice to Daniil Medvedev (Monte Carlo and Rome) and going out in Madrid to Carlos Alcaraz.
