At every grand slam this season Medvedev has posted his best result, a final in the Australian Open, a quarterfinal at Roland Garros and a semi-final at Wimbledon. His previous best result at the US Open was a final, now he wants to go one step further. All tournament he’s showcased his powerful serve and capable defending.

Build up

Medvedev made the semi-finals at the Olympics this year, then went on to win the Canada masters. The last tournament he entered before the US Open was the Cincinnati Masters, he lost in the semi-finals. It’s been a strong lead up, but not perfect.

This tournament, Medvedev has never looked in trouble. He’s dropped only a single set, to Botic van de Zandschulp, even then the Russian seemed unphased. Some have said that Medvedev has even had too easy of a tournament and his level might not be high enough to win the final.

Auger Aliassime

Felix Auger Aliassime is only 21 years old and has never been this deep into a grand slam before. His coach, Toni Nadal, is quite familiar with this phase of the tournament, having coached his son through three US Open victories.

Build up

In all honesty Auger Aliassime has been a bit lucky to get here. His section’s favourite, Andrey Rublev was knocked out early. The predicted seed for his quarterfinal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, was taken out by Carlos Alcaraz, who then pulled out of his quarterfinal match in the second set due to an injury. Auger Aliassime has had some tough matches to get here, including a five-set match against Bautista Agut.

In the build-up to the US Open he had a strong performance in Cincinnati, reaching the quarterfinals.

These two have only met once, in Toronto 2018, Medvedev won the match 3-6, 6-4, 7-6.

Who will win?

Medvedev is higher ranked and seeded, and the strong favourite for this match. However, Felix Auger Aliassime has already made his best result at a slam, he can throw everything at this match. He’s been fighting all the way to get here, whereas Medvedev is yet to be pushed properly. Could Auger Aliassime be the one to do it?
