Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz earned a convincing 6-2, 6-1, 7-5 US Open defeat of Federico Coria on Thursday to take over joint lead in the match-wins category this season.
The tournament No. 3 joined Stefanos Tsitsipas with 46 victories, with that pair topping the table in the category.
The youngster will now play for the fourth round against Jenson Brooksby.
The American sprang a surprise on Cincinnati winner Borna Coric, who lost 6-4, 7-6(10), 6-1 to Brooksby, who saved seven set points in the opener before converting on his eighth and carrying on for victory.
Alcaraz had no complaints about his victory in just over two hours.
“”I had to be really, really focused; in a Grand Slam, every minutes on courts counts,” he said.
“You have to show your best level. I think I did it today and I’m really happy with that.
“I enjoyed playing today. Of course I’m trying not to think about the pressure, or the results (or the) ranking.
“I think I am getting better every day here.’
Alcaraz also earned revenge against Argentine Coria, who defeated the 16-year-old Spaniard’s ATP main draw debut at Rio two years ago.
Cam Norrie landed a fourth Brit in the third-round here to set a record for the post-1968 Open era. He joined Andy Murray, Jack Draper and Dan Evans in the winning wave.
Norrie defeated Portugal’s Joao Sousa 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(4); Evans posted 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win over Australian James Duckworth which took three hours.
“It’s nice to see everybody doing well, but them winning doesn’t help me. I still have to win the match,” Evans said.
“There are two playing tomorrow, two playing the day after.
“Hopefully Andy and Jack can win. I mean, it would be amazing if there was four in the fourth round.”
Italian 11th seed Jannik Sinner matched American Chris Eubanks with a dozen aces apiece in a 6-4, 7-698), 6-2 win into the third round.
Sinner broke four times to take victory in just under two and a half hours.as he works to at least match his fourth round from last year here.
“It was a tough match. A player who I never faced before, so I didn’t knew exactly what to expect,” Sinner said.
“I knew his biggest weapon was his serve, I tried to adapt myself in the best possible way.
“The second set was tight, the tiebreak was long, but it was the key today.”
Sinner was joined as a winner by 2014 champion and 15th seed Marin Cilic, who hammered 16 aces in his 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Spain’s Albert Ramos.
Russian ninth seed Andrey Rublev dominated Korean Soowoo Kwon 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 as he converted each of his six break points and added a dozen aces to ensure victory in an hour and three-quarters.
