Top chair umpire Carlos Bernardes  has suffered a heart attack whilst in mandatory quarantine in Melbourne having been rushed from The View Hotel to hospital on a “non-covid related matter”

The Brazilian who was due to be officiating at the Open is now reported to be recovering well.

Bernardes and Rafa Nadal famously clashed at Wimbledon in 2018 when the chair umpire slapped a time violation on the Spaniard even before the match had started for taking too long between the end of the warm-up and start of the first game.

The two-time Wimbledon champion Nadal admitted the violation was warranted but added that it was the “disrespect he felt from Bernardes” which created the  rift.
