Ukrainian Kostyuk crashes Andreescu

Marta Kostyuk joined compatriot Elina Svitolina in the second round of the WTA Washington event as she dumped former US Open winner Bianca Andreescu out in the first round 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5).

The loss for the 2019 Grand Slam winner whose career has sagged since her success four years ago, marked a hardcourt summer poor start for the Canadian ranked 44th.

Kostyuk, 21. took revenge for a loss to Andreescu earlier this season; the winner came from a set down and saved three match points in the deciding set before finally securing victory in two and three-quarter hours.

“There were some painful mistakes,” the winner said.

“Honestly, I didn’t believe I could win this one but I was just trying to play every point and stay in the match and fight not give up.”

Andreescu had the most winners (31 to 25) but also hit 38 unforced errors to 37 for her opponent.

The Canadian managed to break on just five of 14 chances.
