Tsitsipas win sets up Fognini clash

Stefanos Tsitsipas took just 93 minutes to win his second round Indian Wells match on Sunday night, defeating Spaniard Pedro Martinez 6-2, 6-4.

The Greek’s 22 winners and 63 per cent of first serve points were more than his opponent, who made 21 unforced errors in the match compared to Tsitsipas’ eleven.

“It’s been a great night for me. The first time playing a night session here on this court,” Tsitsipas said.

Tsitsipas took a 2-0 advantage early and hit 11 winners, with only five errors to quickly secure the first set.

Martinez broke at the start of the second set and took a 3-1 before Tsitsipas broke back, reeling off three straight games to edge his nose in front and broke for the second time to secure the contest.

The win set a third-round clash against 25th seed Fabio Fognini, a three-set winner over Jan-Lennard Struff.

“I’m pretty happy with the way I fought and found a way to clinch that victory at the end… I’ve played Fognini before. I’m looking forward to that match-up.”
