Stefanos Tsitsipas stretched his career-long domination of Italians on Friday with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Fabio Fognini to reach the Swiss Open Gstaad semi-finals on Friday.
The Greek top seed has blazed a winning trail in his tournament debut, winning both of his matches so far in straight sets in the 1,050-meter altitude in this resort village.
Seventh seed Fognini has now lost all five of his matches against the Greek, who stands a near-perfect 14-1 against Italians on clay.
Tsitsipas broke twice in each set while losing his own serve two times on the way to the win in 68 minutes.
“My game plans worked well,” the winner said. “I was very consistent throughout.
“I’ve been working on things in my game, I’m hoping to keep it (winning) up.”
The 25-year-old lined up his 19th Tour-level semi on clay, winning 13 of them so far. He has reached a tournament final four three times this season, including Monte Carlo and Barcelona.
