Tsitsipas inspired by tennis return to Europe

Greek-born Stefanos Tsitsipas is ready to defend his Monte Carlo title, boosted by the annual ATP return to Europe and the clay courts.

The three-time champion here won the title a year ago over Norway’s Casper Ruud after also lifting the honours in 2021 and 2022.

And after a so-so month on North American hardcourts, the world No. 8 is pleased to be back in his element.

“I’m glad to be back in Europe, it always feels like home.. Monaco, or Greece or anywhere..

“It’s a great sensation coming back,” Tsitsipas said. “I’m reminded of the quality of life that I’m lucky to have here, surrounded by the people that I love.

“It brings a lot of peace to my game, playing in what I feel is the nicest part of the Tour (calendar).”

Tsitsipas said that despite winning Monte Carlo 12 months ago and then playing the Barcelona final against Ruud, he is hoping to carry his game farther on the dirt in 2025.

The winner of the Dubai hardcourt title in February was drawn into the current conflict between players and the ATP and Grand Slam regarding the prize money split.

With the competitor share well under 20 per cent, players have been pushing recently for talks to make the split fairer in their regard.

“I don’t have a figure in my mind,” the 26-year-old said. “But it is not where it should be in my opinion.

“I’m surprised this (reaction) did not happen years ago.

“I’m hoping players can get out there and push them to try and make it as fair as possible.

“Players should be together on this. I feel that tennis separates us instead of bringing us together. We just want to get what’s fair for us.”
