Stefanos Tsitsipas can’t fault Nick Kyrgios for his various social media squabbles, with the Greek simply branding the Aussie bad boy as a harmless phenomenon.
“Nick, he is the black sheep of the ATP. He likes to do unpredictable stuff. He likes attention, let’s not refute that. And that’s totally normal. There is nothing wrong with that,” Tsitsipas told America’s NCR podcast.
“He has his own personality, which turns out, some people love it. A lot of people hate it and don’t understand it.
“But there are some people that are so into it. I think it’s totally fine and our sport needs that.
“It’s entertainment. It’s fun. It’s something unique and special that not many players have.”
The Greek, whose 208,000 Twitter followers are around half the size of the 418,000 of Kyrgios, said that while he’s not best mates with the Aussie, the pair get along fine.
“I wouldn’t say we share a very close friendship but he does FaceTime me from time to time, at completely random times. Sometimes 1am. I don’t get it.”
Kyrgios, ranked 47th, has not competed for a year after taking the entire COVID-19 season off.
He is noted for long-running social media stoushes with the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Boris Becker and has called out what he considers a lax ATP attitude to the virus pandemic.
