Dominic Thiem will start his grass-court preparation in the unlikely venue of Spain after accepting a wild card into the new Mallorca event.
The ATP 250 from June 19-26 in Santa Ponça, not far from Rafael Nadal’s home village of Manacor, will remind the Austrian of his training days on the island.
The current US Open holder needs to repair his game in a hurry after the two-time Roland Garros finalist exited at the current edition at Roland Garros in the first round this week to Pablo Andujar.
Nadal’s uncle and former coach Toni is tournament director: “We are very happy that Dominic Thiem, one of the most successful players of the past few years, is coming to our tournament in Mallorca. “
Joining the field on grass courts installed under supervision of Wimbledon experts will be 2021 ATP inners Pablo Carreno Busta (Marbella) and the up-and-coming Norwegian Caspar Ruud (Geneva),.
Also in the field: Russian Karen Khachanov, Australian Nick Kyrgios and Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez.
Only 1,500 spectators per day will be allowed on the grounds of the country club venue, with evening sessions also planned.
