Dominic Thiem has a chance to regain pride and lift his ranking after more than two years of injury hell as he faces Sebastien Baez.
The former US Open winner was playing his fourth final on Austrian home soil in Saturday’s title match against Argentine Sebastian Baez.
It’s been a long, hard road back for the 29-year-old Thiem, who once stood third in the rankings but suffered a wrist injury in June, 2021, which derailed his fast-track progress.
The two-time Roland Garros finalist will rise into the Top 80 form his current 116 if he can win his first ATP title since claiming the Open crown in New York in 2020.
“It’s very special, my first final on the Tour since my wrist injury. I couldn’t be happier that it’s here in Austria at home,” Thiem said.
He won Kitzbuehel in the Austrian Alps in 2019 and will be aiming for his 17th career trophy when he faces the 72nd-ranked Baez.
Thiem will play his first final since the year-end ATP event in London, 2020.
