Austrian Dominic Thiem defeated German Alexander Zverev, 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(6), to win the 2020 US Open men’s singles title on Sunday night in a match weighted with historical significance.
Thiem is the first player to come from two sets down in the championship match to win since American Richard “Pancho” Gonzales defeated countryman Fred Schroeder Jr., 16-18, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4, in 1949.
This was also the first-ever US Open championship match to be decided with a fifth-set tiebreak.
