Thiem, Schwartzman cruise into round three

Dominic Thiem wasted little time disposing of German Dominik Koepfer in Melbourne today, losing just just six games as he won his second round match 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.

Left-hander Koepfer, ranked 70, gave Thiem a run for his money in the opening set but couldn’t keep pace with the world No.4 as Thiem dominated the second set and the third to set up a potential clash with Aussie firebrand Nick Kyrgios.

“It was great, to be honest,” Thiem said.

“I really love this court and have pretty good stats on it, so super happy to be back.”

“Today was good. My best match so far in Australia this year.

Meanwhile, Argentinian Diego Schwartzman also went through, beating Frenchman Alexandre Muller 6-2, 6-0, 6-3.

Schwartzman made just 13 unforced errors in a game that lasted 92 minutes, and broke Muller’s serve nine times to advance.

The 28-year-old eighth seed will next face Russian qualifier Aslan Karatsev, who beat Belarusian Egor Gerasimov 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.
