Austrian Dominic Thiem will call time on his career this autumn in Vienna as he plays his last ATP event.
The 30-year-old has been bothered for the last few seasons by repeated injuries which began with a wrist complaint.
The 2020 US Open champion confirmed his decision on Friday; he has played in the main draw of just four ATP-level tournaments this season, most recently a first-round defeat in Munich on April 15.
“I’m gonna finish my career at the end of this season,” he posted on Instagram.
“My wrist is not the way it should be and how I want it. I was thinking about this decision for a very long time.”
The Austrian has won 17 career titles and reached third in the world in March, 2020, six months before his US open trophy success.
Thiem at one time threatened the Federer-Nadal-Djokovic power trio, compiling a cumulative 9-3 against them in 2019-20.
His wrist problems began in June 2021 and never fully healed.
Thiem, ranked 117, has been stuck in a fruitless series of Challenger events for the past two seasons as his comeback failed to materialise.
