Thiem calls an early end to comeback season

Dominic Thiem is now close enough to the ranking Top 100 to skip qualification rounds for next week’s Paris Masters.

The former No. 3, who will reportedly be ranked 101 on Monday, high enough to be included in January’s Australian Open main draw. So competing this coming week was not really necessary..

Thiem subsequently turned down a Paris wildcard entry which had only been offered into qualifying rounds this weekend.

His final match of 2022 was Thursday’s 6-3, 6-3 loss in Vienna to Daniil Medvedev.

“I’ll focus on the preparation so that I will be fully ready for early 2023,” he said.

“At the beginning of December, I’ll fly to the Emirates, do my preparations there and from there to Australia.”

After suffering a wrist injury in June, 2021, Thiem began his comeback last March. He reached three ATP semi-finals, winning 18 of his 34 matches.

“It’s been exhausting the last few weeks. I’ve played a lot since July. That’s why the season is over for me. Also because I got good news from the ATP. I have 550 points (and am into) the Australian Open,.
