Benoit Paire is ready to sacrifice a run to the top of the game for the simple pleasures of a post-match beer, with the quirky bearded Frenchman a big fan of fellow “slacker” Nick Kyrgios.
Paire revealed his laid-back philosophy to life on court in a recently published book, Crazy and Quirky Stories: Tennis like you’ve never seen it.
The 28th-ranked winner of three career clay titles calls controversial Aussie Kyrgios “a good guy.”
“We criticize his attitude and say that he hurts everyone, has no drive and actually no desire to play – but in the end everyone watches him,” Paire writes in a translation from French by racquetmag.com
The Frenchman related the tale of Kyrgios in the locker room after losing to Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon, 2019, when the Aussie downed three beers in the locker room before heading to post-match media duties.
.”Nick, frankly, doesn’t worry too much and makes good money. The Australian media is taking him apart but he stays the way he is. He just doesn’t care.”
Paire admits that his tenis motivation can be lacking, evidenced by multiple racquet-smashing incidents and some heavy Tour losses.
“Winning a Grand Slam tournament was never my motivation. I prefer to be in the top 30 and enjoy life… play golf and drink a spritzer when I feel like it, instead of giving up everything to become No. 1 .”
Unlike many, Paire insists he will not miss tennis when he retires.
“There’s a void when you stop playing. But when I stop, I still have my spritzers, my nights, my golf … “I make money, I have fun.”
