Jannik Sinner could well be missing from the opening European clay event of next season as his team grapples with how to avoid burnout and injury for the world No. 1.

Coach Darren Cahill told Milan’s Corriere della Sera that the call has yet to be made. But given the quick turnaround between the end of the hardcourt Miami event and the start on clay in the principality, giving Monaco a miss is being seriously considered.

The Italian could not play a Madrid quarter-final last spring due to a hip injury which Cahill believes came from the surface transition.

Sinner, who bracketed the 2024 season with Australian and US Open titles, then missed the Rome event. But he fought through illness and Wimbledon and did not play the Paris Olympics, preferring to rest.

“We will change a few things. The transition from Miami to clay this year was too abrupt, we will prepare him better, also to avoid the risk of injuries,” Cahill said.

“Everything will continue to revolve around the Slams.

“The ATP is not making our lives easier by extending the Masters 1000: some last two weeks. So it is not easy to rest: we will make some choices.”
