American Taylor Fritz scored one of the biggest wins of his career at Indian Wells on Tuesday, beating Italian fifth seed Matteo Berrettini 6-4, 6-3.
2021 Wimbledon finalist Berrettini beat off five match points in the second set before Fritz eventually claimed victory after 81 minutes of play.
Fritz will face another Italian, No.10 seed Jannik Sinner next. Sinner had a walkover because John Isner had earlier withdrawn from the vent to attained the birth of his third child.
“I have been looking for some good results in these big events for a bit, and I definitely let more than a couple kind of slip away from me that I felt like I should have won,” Fritz said.
“So it’s nice to kind of just play a solid match, close it out in the end there. Move forward, give myself another opportunity to maybe make quarterfinal, semifinal here at a big event.”
In another upset, Russian Karen Khachanov blew past Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta 6-0, 6-4.
Khachanov will face Nikoloz Basilashvili in the round of 16 after the Georgian fought back from a set down to beat Albert Ramos-Vinolas 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-2.
