Photo – Belinda Bencic to star in Biel event
As European nations increase the tempo of unofficial exhibitions during the continuing tennis COVID-19 lockdown, the temptation has become too much to resist for the Swiss federation.
Though the men’s side will be missing injured Roger Federer and the absent Stan Wawrinka, some of the nation’s major WTA players will line up in Biel on July 25-26 for the weekend hit-out.
That date would have been the pointy end of the now-cancelled Gstaad ATP clay event, which fell victim to the summer wave of Tour cancellations.
Swiss officials have apparently taken hope from ongoing national events in France, Austria and Serbia as they announced their own plan to get players back onto court in one format or another.
The more impressive women’s field will feature WTA No. 8 Belinda Bencic on a side with Stefanie Voegele and former great Martina Hingis on a Red side coached by Roger Federer’s longtime mentor Severin Luthi.
The White team will boast Jil Teichman, Viktorija Golubic (123rd) and ex-player Patty Schnyder; coach will be former player and fed Cup captain Heinz Günthardt.
The action will comprise two singles, a single Legends and doubles.
The men’s competition has yet to be finalised, with No. 137 Henri Laaksonen the first to come onboard.
That tournament will be played as Fast 4 – tiebreak at 4-4 and a super tie-break as a third set.
