Stan Wawrinka cannot deny that his comeback from several foot surgeries is not going as he had planned.
But the three-time Grand Slam trophyholder to lost on Monday’s first day of the US Open says he still has hopes for massive improvement.
The 37-year-old Swiss was defeated in the first round 6-4, 7-6(7) by Corentin Moutet of France in two hours.
Wawrinka, who won the Open in 2016, only returned to the Tout in March and has only three wins in that period – the last in June at Queen’s Club, London.
But he absolutely refuses to give up hope.
“I’m getting closer to the end. That’s for sure. I was injured for more than a year,” the former No. 3 said.
” It took me a while to feel much better physically and tennis-wise. I still love the game and want to compete a bit longer before stopping.
“As much as I enjoy and love what I’m doing, I want to keep going a little bit for sure.
“I will need to have some result too, because you cannot just keep being on tour and losing.”
He added with a note of optimism: “I see that I’m playing and feeling better. Even if I’m not winning yet, I know I will be back winning matches soon.
That’s for sure.”
