Iga Swiatek had to wait a day to spring a 6-2, 7-5 Saturday upset on two-time champion Elina Svitolina to reach the Rome Masters semi-finals.

With the match delayed a day by Friday rain, Poland’s reigning Roland Garros winner spent  98 minutes in taking victory with her first defeat of a Top 10 opponent in 2021.

She faces an evening semi against American Coco Gauff, who advanced to the semis when top seed ASsh barty had to quit their match with an existing arm injury.

Fifth seed Svitolina won the Rome trophy in 2017 and 2018, lost serve five times, including a break in the final game which cemeted the win for Swiatek.
