Iga Swiatek returned to court less than 24 hours after her previous win at the WTA Dubai 1000 event and posted a 7-5, 6-0 defeat of injured Dayana Yastremska to reach the quarter-finals.
The second-seeded Pole was back in action at the Aviation Club after hammering Victoria Azarenka with the loss of just two games the previous evening after a day of rain delays.
Yastremska needed a medical timeout as she trailed a set and 3-0, with the physio manipulating her neck and treating her right shoulder.
2023 runner-up Swiatek finished off victory three games later on her third match point.
“I tried to be consistent with my service game,” the former world No. 1 Pole said of an opening set which lasted an hour.
“I knew my chances would come and I was ready to use them,”
Swiatek, a 2024 semi-finalist here, said that facing the Ukrainian who had beaten her in their only other match was a matter of strategy.
“There are a lot of heavy hitters on the Tour, you have to grab the points when you can.
“You have to have patience and acceptance, but I’m used to that,” added the five-time Grand Slam winner. “I can play against all styles.
“So far I’ve kept my focus and played two very efficient matches. Finishing quicker (she has spent a total of two and a quarter hours on court) will help me.”
