Swiatek admits she’s still shaky on grass

Iga Swaitek may have dominated for much of the 2022 season, but the Wimbledon top seed admitted on Saturday that she remains in some doubt over her skills on grass.

“I still feel like I need to figure out grass,” she said. “Last year it was that kind of tournament where I didn’t know what to expect.

“Then match by match I realised maybe I can do more and more.”

The Polish top seed who has won her last 35 matches – including six straight titles – comes to the All England Club without a run-up match on grass and only managed the fourth round here in 2021.

She remains unworried: “I don’t have to kind of show everybody that I need to play well in every tournament because it’s tennis, we have ups and downs.

“I try to play without expectations and just see what this tournament brings me.”

“This year I only played (trained), like, 10 days on grass, so it’s not a lot. I didn’t have a lot of time to prepare.

“But I’m just trying to stay open-minded and kind of take positives from the situation and realise that I can play without any expectations.”
