Even with five clay titles among the 15 achieved during her career, Elina Svitolina can’t seem to find the key to major success at Roland Garros.
The fifth-ranked Ukrainian who has been to the Paris quarter-finals three times, will give the European clay campaign another go this week in Stuttgart.
The fourth seed who has played the indoor clay tournament just once before (2018) is still trying to puzzle through her failings on the big stage on the surface.
“I grew up playing on this surface and I would love to go further,” she said on Tuesday.
“I would love to play better also in Madrid; I’ve played well there but have not gone far in the tournament.
“But it’s tough to pick one thing that’s not letting me play better.”
Svitolina, recently engaged to French pro Gael Monfils in Switzerland, remains befuddled by her French Open performances.
“”Even like last year at Roland Garros I played really good matches and then in the quarter final it was a tough battle for me, it was a tough match for me.
“All the time, something is not clicking – I wish I could find it.
“I try to give myself a good chance, I try to prepare well, I try to work really hard towards those clay court tournaments and I try to take my time to really work on my game.”
