Second seed Karolina Pliskova on Tuesday won another personal struggle with playing conditions in Dubai as the second seed advanced to the third round.,

The Czech took two and a quarter hours to hold off Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2, with the winner still not completely satisfied with her form in the flyaway desert conditions.

Pliskova made it all look like hard work as she railed to serve out a straight-sets passage to the third round, wasting two match points in the tenth game and losing the set in a tiebreaker.

But she fought back in the third to go through with two more breaks of her opponent.

“I had a lot of chances in the second, I could have won this much faster,: she said.

“But I found extra strength to fight back after that unfortunate second set, I found a way to win in the third.

The player with 11 double-faults added: “Conditions were tough, they are always tough here. The balls fly so much.

“Sometimes you don’t have many chances to control the ball, you miss a little bit more.

“I was struggling with mistakes and unforced errors, I hope things get better. But I’m super-happy with this win.”

Pliskova, the 2015 finalist here, will next go against Jessica Pegula for a second consecutive week after losing to the Australian Open quarter-finalist last week in the Doha quarters.

“She played great in Doha, she’s confident now,” Pliskova said. “I must be more  careful, I was tired last week and not really ready to play.”
