Elena Vesninia has revealed the harsh reality of the GOAT tennis sweepstakes, suggesting that Novak Djokovic will never get the love which fans have always given to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
The 34-year-old who returned to the WTA in Madrid this season after two years away for childbirth, put the hard word on the prickly world No. 1 Serb – admittedly an acquired taste to many.
“It seems to me that Novak has every chance to catch up and overtake Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal” Vesnina told Russian website championat.com.
“Will Djokovic have more Grand Slam titles than Serena Williams (23)? Maybe I can believe it.
“I have great respect for Djokovic and Nadal, but for me Federer is the greatest tennis player of all time.”
The former No. 13 who last played in the Roland Garros third round, added: “I love Roger as a tennis player, of course.
“If Novak wins the Olympics, then he’ll get even closer to Federer, as Roger doesn’t have a singles gold medal.
“But, I think when it comes to the fans, he will never receive the same love and support as Federer and Nadal. “
Federer and Nadal share joint lead in the all-time Grand Slam singles titles race, with 20 while Djokovic pulled to 19 by winning the French Open eight days ago over Stefanos Tsitsipas.
