Stan Wawrinka is likely to miss the start of the spring clay season after undergoing minor surgery for a left foot problem.

The three-time Grand Slam champion Swiss broke the news of social media, posting Thursday on Twitter:

“After having some problems in my left foot for a while, I have decided to do a small procedure on it. Everything went well. I will be out for a few weeks, but can’t wait to start practicing again soon.”

The 35-year-old currently ranks 21st after a slow start to 2021. After losing three straight matches, Wawrinka joined the exit of big names from this week’s Miami Masters.

The operation for the third for Wawrinka since August, 2017, when he twice underwent knee procedures.

Wawrinka gave no indication of when he might resume to the ATP; the clay season kicks off in Monte Carlo within a fortnight.
