Stan Wawrinka has pulled the plug on outdoor hardcourts and will turn his attention to a clay debut in early April.
Switzerland’s three-time Grand Slam champion withdrew from this week’s Dubai event and will also not bother to travel to Miami for that pared-down Masters 1000 starting next week.
Instead, the player who turns 36 in a few weeks will turn his Monte Carlo training towards clay with an eye to playing the new Marbella 250 tournament in southern Spain from April 5.
Wawrinka has not enjoyed the best start to the COVID-impacted 2021 season, winning just one match at the Australian Open and then going out in the first rounds at Rotterdam and Doha.
