New York has prepared itself for a tearful farewell to legend Serena Williams tonight as the 23-time Grand Slam winner faces world No.80 Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic at a sold out Flushing Meadows.

But win or lose on Monday, Williams won’t be departing the US Open stage immediately.

Organisers confirmed on Saturday that she and elder sister Venus Williams had been given a wild card into the women’s doubles tournament. That even starts on Wednesday.

In her last singles outing at the Cincinnati Masters earlier this month, Williams was beaten 6-4, 6-0 by Britain’s Emma Raducanu.

It is the first time the Williams sisters have played doubles since 2018, a partnership that has seen them win 14 Grand Slam titles.
