Sinner to celebrate ATP return with Hamburg debut

Jannik Sinner will mark his return to tennis after disciplinary proceedings with a debut appearance on the clay of the ATP Hamburg 500, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The world No. 1 Italian will be allowed back in action after serving a no-fault three-month doping ban after admitting “partial responsibility” mistakes by his ex-physio which led to a pair of positive trace tests a year ago for the banned anabolic steroid clostebol.

They Hamburg date at the Rothenbaum club will serve as Sinner’s final tuneup before Roland Garros.

He is due to return earlier in May in time to play the Rome Masters with his ban ending on May 4.

The 23-year-old played the Paris Grand Slam semi-finals; it will be the first time since 2008 (Roger Federer) that a No. 1 will play Hamburg.
Others in the field include Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Holger Rune, Gael Monfils and Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.

The German event will run from May 17–24, ending one day before the start of play at Roland Garros
