Sinner the saint in Roland Garros opener

Jannik Sinner got off to a flyer at Roland Garros with a 7-5 6-0 6-3 win over David Goffin – his first ever win at the event.

The young Italian took control of the match midway through the first set and never looked back, winning 11 straight games.

“For me it is never easy to play at the start of a tournament,” Sinner said.

“I often train with Goffin when I am in Monte-Carlo. We have a good relationship and it is not easy to play against a good friend.

Sinner added it was nice to see fans watching.

“Tennis and general sport need fans,” he said.

Sinner set up a second round match against French qualifier Benjamin Bonzi, who beat Emil Ruusuvuori 6-2 6-4 4-6 6-4.
