Sinner swamps Dimitrov to claim breakthrough Miami trophy

Jannik Sinner shattered another barrier on Sunday, with the Italian set to reach second in the world after overwhelming Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-1  to win the Miami Masters.

The 22-year-old has now lifted three titles from four events this season: Melbourne, Rotterdam and here. He has won 25 of his last 26 matches dating to Italy’s Davis Cup title in Spain last November.

He becomes the first Italian to lift the honours here and stands as the only ATP player to win three titles in 2024.

Sinner finished off victory over his Bulgarian Top 10 opponent in 82 minutes on the first of three match points; he broke Dimitrov four times, and ended with just nine unforced errors.

“I’m really proud of this result,” the winner said. “I started off the tournament slowly, struggling a bit with the conditions.

‘As the tournament went on I felt better and better. I’m proud of how I handled the situation. It’s been a good two weeks here.”

Sinner tried to put his finger on a run of success which landed him his second Masters title after Toronto last August.

“I’m staying in the present moment, trying to improve and enjoy it. You never know how long this will last,” said the players who stands 22-1 on the season.

“But the clay season is now coming and it’s completely different. Let’s see how I play from now on.”

Sinner now owns 13 career titles – a national record.

He is the first Italian to reach ATP No. 2 and he first to win more than one Masters trophy.
