Jannik Sinner lined up a chance at near-instant revenge as he moved into a second round showdown with top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas on Wednesday at the ATP Rotterdam event.

The Italian who won the title 72 hours ago in Montpellier, France, advanced with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 defeat of Benjamin Bonzi.

Sinner lost in the Australian Open fourth round to Tsitsipas barely three weeks ago, his fifth defeat in six meetings with the world No. 3 Greek.

“For sure it’s tough when you come quite late to the other tournament, so I’m very happy about my performance today,” Sinner said.

“It was not easy for me. We made a lot of unforced errors today. But still I tried to stay focussed [on] my game.”

Sinner now stands 9-2 on the season after advancing in two hours.

“I started off very well and I finished quite well, so I’m happy,” the winner said.

Former tournament champion Stan Wawrinka won a battle of veterans over Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-3 for a quarter-final spot.

Warwinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, claimed the Dutch title eight years ago and played the final in 2019 against Gael Monfils.
