Sinner begins marathon make-up with with opening win

Jannik Sinner got his first job of a busy Saturday on court done and dusted as the defending champion rolled over Alejandro Tabilo 6-4, 6-3 at the Montreal Masters and prepared to do it all again.

After Friday’s total washout of play, several players were saddled with double duty in order to get the oddly scheduled event which wraps up on Monday back on schedule.

Sinner polished of his Canadian-born Chilean opponent in 80 minutes and then retreated to the physio room to prepare for a successive encounter with fifth seed Andrey Rublev, with the winner reaching the semi-finals.

Rublev booked his spot 6-2, 6-2 over American Brandon Nakashima.

Sinner, the world No. 1 who claimed the Canadian title a year ago, stands 24-1 on hardcourt this season.

The Italian overcame a blustery wind on a sunny day following constant rain 24 hours earlier.

“It felt like a good match but I knew I had to try and play one more time,” he said. “There is not much being happy afterwards… to recover is the most important thing.

“When you are a set and a break up, you want to try and win in straight sets. To get to the second match you have to win the first one, even if it takes three or four hours.”
