Grigor Dimitrov earned his quick-fire third-round victory over injured opponent Pablo Carreno Busta with fear of the Melbourne lockdown hanging over his head.
The 6-0, 1-0, result took just 39 minutes, with the Spaniard taking an injury timeout between sets.
Former Top 10 Dimitrov said he played with knowledge that the city was likely to be locked down due to the recent airport quarantine hotel virus outbreak.
“Clearly it’s unexpected.” he said of the five-day shutdown which was taking effect at midnight on Friday.
“Throughout the past months and with everything that has been happening, nothing can surprise me. Of course, safety first on all ends.
“We are still very fortunate to be able to play a Grand Slam tournament in the middle of a pandemic. I’m very, very thankful to the Australian Open, to all the parties that made this thing happen.”
The Bulgarian added: “It’s not going to be the same without the spectators, but very thankful for the opportunity I had.”
