Kei Nishikori handed in a walkover at the Toronto Masters on Wednesday, as the Japanese player withdrew from his second-round match due to a shoulder injury.
The withdrawal of Asia’s top player sent Pole Hubert Hurkacz into the third round.
Nishikori has a history with injuries, missing significant chunks of recent seasons as a result.
“I am disappointed to announce that I have decided to withdraw from my match today,” he said.
“The right shoulder is very sore after a long stretch of tennis and I do not want to risk further injury.
“I will now focus on getting healthy and back on court again.”
