Shelton survives US loss earthquake

American Ben Shelton emerged a Miami Masters survivor on Sunday a day after three compatriots were bounced out in the second round.

The No. 17 managed what Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe could not by reaching the third round thanks to a defeat of Spain’s Martin Landaluce 6-3, 6-4.

Shelton needed 75 minutes to advance as the sun finally came out after two rain-delayed days; he moved through without facing a break point.

“It’s just really cool to be here, it’s a special atmosphere here, especially at night, It’s an electric atmosphere.

“That’s what I live for on the tennis court, so just happy to be here and happy to be able to play another match here.”

The winner called his game “pretty complete.”

“I did a great job backing up my serve and usually when I have a lot of confidence and holding easily, the rest of my game continues to flow.

Shelton next faces Italian Lorenzo Musetti, who beat Roman Safiullin 7-5, 6-1, with the American hunting his 12th win of the season
