Jo-Wilfried Tsonga dropped his ninth match of the season on Tuesday as the Frenchman struggles to find post-injury form, taking a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Egor Gerasimov to exit the Eastbourne Championships.
The 36-year-old Tsonga has had nothing but disappointment so far this season after 2021 knee problem
“It’s a shame that I couldn’t get into this match a little better. It’s a bit my problem lately,” the 36-year-old said.
“I have trouble getting started, I’m struggling to fully engage at the start of the match. Clearly, I do not yet have the sufficient level to match it with the opponents,” added the No. 83.
Tsonga made improvements in the second set against his Belarus opposition but was unable to gain traction; he now moves on to Wimbledon, where he has achieved two semi-finals, the first a decade ago.
“It’s always a pleasure to go to Wimbledon. I am delighted to play in this rather crazy place.
“But it’s a little new for me to be the guy who loses in the first round, second round.
“It was not like that for me for 15 years, when it happened once a year, I didn’t like it. Now I’m taking everything as a new challenge.”
