World No.1 Iga Swiatek led the charge into the last 16 of the Australian Open on Friday, as No.2 Ons Jabeur became another seed casualty.
Swiatek looked ominous as she beat qualifier Cristina Bucsa of Spain 6-0, 6-1, but Jabeur hit 50 unforced errors as she crashed out in three sets, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 to Czech Marketa Vondrousova.
Americans Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula were winners, Gauff beating fellow American Bernarda Pera 6-3, 6-2 and Pegula thumping Marta Kostyuk 6-0, 6-2.
Next up for Swiatek is Elena Rybakina after the Wimbledon champion beat 2022 Melbourne runner-up Danielle Collins.
“For sure she’s very strong physically and mentally,” Rybakina said.
“I will have to take all my chances. I think Iga is a great player.”
