A ruthless performance from No.3 seed Daniil Medvedev ended Frances Tiafoe’s run at the US Open on Monday evening with a dominant 6-4, 6-1, 6-0 win.
With no Djokovic to face, last year’s runner-up is homing on a final spot and on tis showing looks almost unbeatable.
“I’m playing better with every match and I hope this can continue,” Medvedev saids after the match.
”I was lucky enough to get the early break, relax a little bit and then I started playing amazing tennis after that.
I’m pleased with the fact that I’ve won all of these sets and didn’t have to stay long on the court.
“That’s always good when you’re playing a Grand Slam.”
For the record, and why people are now sitting up to take notice, Medvedev is the only male quarter-finalist this year to reach the last eight without dropping a set.
And the Russian has only been broken three times in 51 service games.
After grabbing a break at 1-1 in the first set, he never looked back, with some superb sideline shots that Tiafoe couldn’t handle.
Tiafoe changed tactics in the second, with a variety of spin and slice shots, but when that didn’t work, almost gave up as Medvedev again took control.
The final set a formality, Medvedev 4-0 up in record time before he finished off his opponent with some superb shots.
Up next is compatriot Andrey Rublev, who upset sixth seed Matteo Berrettini earlier in the day.
”He’s playing amazing this year and it’s really cool that we managed to be in the quarter-finals together,” Medvedev said.
“Of course, it would be better if we were playing a final,” Medvedev said. “On the court, there are no friends and he knows that also. We’re going to have a good match.”
