Russia sees off Italy to win ATP Cup

Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev steered Russia to a comfortable 2-0 win over Italy in the final of the ATP Cup in Melbourne

The pair dominated the event all week winning all eight of their singles matches against the world’s best players.

Medvedev was coming off a run of fourteen consecutive matches going back to November’s Rolex Paris Masters where he beat Alexander Zverev in the final

He finished off his 2020 by winning the Nitto ATP Masters in London.

The World No. 4 beat Italy’s Matteo Berrettini 6-4,6-2 to seal the tie, after compatriot Andrey Rublev mercilessly destroyed a hapless Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-2 in just 61 minutes.

The dynamic duo only dropped two sets during the tournament.

The usually impassive Medvedev cracked a huge smile towards his team bench at the moment of victory.

During the trophy ceremony he beemed “I want to thank my team. Andrey won all of his matches, Thank you for being with me here and lifting this trophy ”

Medvedev’s impressive form ahead of Monday’s start of the Australian Open will not be lost on the contenders for what promises to be a very open open as the field come off the unknown effects of quarantine and restricted practice.
