Rogers roars past Andreescu

Shelby Rogers upset No.8 seed Bianca Andreescu 6-4, 7-5 to reach the round of 16 at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic.

The American could only manage 14 winners – compared to Andreescu’s 27 – but the difference was in unforced errors where the Canadian had 36. Rogers only conceded 16.

Rogers now has six wins over top 20 opposition this year, but has to fight for the first set as Andreescu held five break points.

The world No. 43 held serve and held on to take an early lead.

Andreescu hit two double faults early in the second set as Rogers powered on and a backhand winner gave her the break she needed.

The Canadian then forced it back to 5-5 before Rogers converted her fourth break to take a lead and then see out the set for a memorable win.

Next up in the round of 16 is Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama.
