The long-anticipated return to tennis of Roger Federer at this month’s Laver Cup looks like disappearing amid Swiss reports of fresh knee problems for the 41-year-old icon.

The Tamedia group broke the bad news in a report from the US Open, with sources reporting that Federer is suffering with water on the knee which has been the subject of several medical procedures over the past few years.

The problem has led to inflammation just as the 20-time Grand Slam winner was getting stuck into light training with former Swiss pro Ivo Heuberger.

Federer had been planning to compete for Europe at the Laver Cup in London September 23-25; he is also entered in his home ATP 500 event in Basel, which he has won 10 times, including the last time it was staged in 2019.

His last match was a Wimbledon quarter-final loss in 2021 to Hubert Hurkacz, where he lost the final set to love.
