Unstoppable Andrey Rublev notched up a 22nd straight victory at the ATP 500 level on Wednesday as he dismissed Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-1 at the Dubai event.
The Russian has not lost a match at this level in more than a year, at Dubai, 2020, against Brit Dan Evans in the quarter-finals.
The second seed at the Aviation Club is moving to within striking distance of the all-time best in the series – 28 held by Roger Federer.
Rublev lined up for a re-match with Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, whom he defeated in the Rotterdam final less than a fortnight ago.
Fucsovics booked his place with a third-round victory over Serb Dusan Lajovic 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
.”“I’m really happy that I can win in straight sets, quite confidently. I know Taylor since juniors,” Rublev said.
“It’s always tough against him, he has a huge serve and plays really fast,
“In these conditions, it’s tough to find the rhythm. You don’t know what’s going to happen and it’s really not easy, but I’m happy that in the end I made it.”
The ATP No. 8 remains outwardly befuddled by his run of form in the 500 series, where he has won four titles dating to Hamburg last September.
“It’s not about 500s, it just happens. I’m really happy with my performance.
“I’m really happy that I’m playing and showing good results and we’ll see if I can keep working this way.”
