Emma Raducanu won the US Open on the September 11 this year, and besides the sponsorships and media appearances one of the first things she did was fire coach Andrew Richardson.
Just two weeks after her victory, The 18-year-old was searching for a new coach.
She claimed, “I really need someone right now that has had that WTA Tour experience at the high levels.”
And it’s not the first time she’s done something like that. Her first coach, Nigel Sears, was sacked in her first tournament after a successful Wimbledon, in which she reached the fourth round.
Now after a shock first round exit from Indian Wells and a lackluster quarterfinal run at the Transylvania 250 event, The US Open champion appears to have appointed German Torben Beltz.
The announcement follows nearly seven coachless weeks, in which she worked with the LTA and trialled several coaches, including Andy Murray’s new coach Esteban Carill.
Torben Beltz is a prolific coach, having worked with Croatian Donna Vekic, and former world number one Angelique Kerber. Raducanu has certainly found what she was looking for.
He worked with the German for most of her career on and off for many years, including in 2016, the year she won the Australian Open and the US Open.
When Kerber split from Beltz, she said. “I would like to take on more responsibility, I’m very grateful for our time together and for everything we experienced and achieved as a team.”
Should Raducanu achieve more success, will it be third times a charm, or history repeating itself for Torben Beltz?
