Emma Raducanu became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title as the Briton beat Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in Saturday’s US Open final.

The London 18-year-old ranked 150th claimed her 10th match here after coming through qualies – winning every match in straight sets.

Raducanu triumphed in the battle of teenagers against a Canadian opponent, 19, to claim the first women’s Grand Slam title for Britain since Virginia Wade won Wimbledon in 1977; Wade also won here in 1969.

Raducanu is only the second woman to reach a final after fewer than three Slam appearances after playing her only other major two months ago with a Wimbledon fourth round showing.

She had lost only 27 games in reaching the final and will rise to 23rd in the rankings according to WTA calculations.
