Pressure is now mounting on World No. 49 Sam Querrey and he faces a three-year ban from Tennis after fleeing Russia in a hastily chartered private jet following a positive COVID-19 test in St Petersburg.
Apparently the family sat at the back of the jet to avoid exposing the pilots to the virus and were flown to “a nearby European Country” that does not require a Covid-19 test on arrival, and are now staying in an AirBnB.
If the ATP find his protocol breach to have been a “major offence and damaging to the future of the Tour” he could be fined up to US$100,000 and/or suspended from the ATP for a period of up to three years.
The 33 year old American from Las Vegas was due to play in a first round match round against No. 2 seed Denis Shapovalov the ATP 500 St Petersburg but tested positive for coronavirus along with his wife, Abby, and his eight-month-old son, Ford.
Querrey is entered in further events in the rest of the 2020 ATP Calendar, including the Paris-Bercy Masters beginning on October 31.
