Top seed Karolina Pliskova rolled into the third round at Indian Wells on Saturday, with a 7-5, 6-2 defeat of Polish qualifier Magdalena Frech.
Pliskova, ranked No. 3 in the world, fired six aces and converted five of six breaks on her to way to victory, but the young Pole was first to take advantage, taking a 4-3 lead in the opening set.
Pliskova broke back quickly to lead 6-5 before Frech fired into the net to hand the set to her opponent.
Pliskova powered to a 5-1 lead in the second set before dropping a serve for the match, quickly recovered and broke Frech for the fifth time to claim victory.
Garbine Muguruza was the highest ranked to go out on Saturday, losing 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 to Australian Ajla Tomljanovic.
Anna Kalinskaya outlasted No. 28 Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 and American Amanda Anisimova defeated No. 30 Camila Giorgi 6-4, 6-1.
No. 12 seed Ons Jabeur moved through with a 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3 win over Anastasija Sevastova.
No. 15 seed Coco Gauff saw off Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-1 in a battle that saw her hit 12 aces bit also concede seven double faults.
