Pelvic injury forces Murray to pull out of Cologne

Andy Murray is still suffering repercussions from a troublesome pelvic injury and has withdrawn from this week’s bett1HULKS Cologne Open

The injury flared up in last month’s US Open when he went down to Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets in the second round.

A scan on his return to the UK revealed tendonitis of a muscle between the lower back to the top of the leg.

Announcing his decision on Facebook Murray said that he decided to pull out after practicing  on Sunday.

“I’ve been trying to deal with it in training, and in the matches, and unfortunately after my match here this week it’s flared up again,” he said.

“I’ve been practising the last few days and trying to manage it, but after playing some points today, I decided it was not going to be good enough to play.”

The triple Grand slam winner was due to face the Serbian wildcard Danilo Petrovic in the first round.

“I want to try and play matches and get tournaments in, because physically my body tends to feel better the more I play,” he told the media in Cologne.

It is still possible that Murray might ask for wildcard for the Rolex Paris Masters in two weeks time, the penultimate tour event of this pandemic shortened season.

It was almost a year ago to the day that 33 year old  Murray was the surprise winner of the European Open in Antwerp following  hip resurfacing surgery nine months earlier.
